The Dogs Who Inspired the Company Name

Lucy

The current dog is named Lucy, after Lucille Ball because she has the same kind of crazy, goofy demeanor as Lucy in "I love Lucy" the TV show from the 1950s.

She came to us as a foster dog in the spring of 2023. We epically failed as foster parents just so everyone is clear on that. She came to us as a foster as opposed as a straight adoption because she had a seizure disorder that was discovered while we were in the process of adopting her from A Lab for Life rescue. If you are looking to add a dog to your family and you live in the northeastern US (NY, New England etc.) they are great to work with. Anyway, after consulting with the team at A Lab for Life and our vet we decided that we'd fully adopt her. With proper medications her seizures are under control and she's living a happy normal life. Well as normal as a Lab/Great Pyrenees mix can be. I'm really not sure how much lab she has in her though. She doesn't play fetch, could care less about tennis balls, and isn't big on swimming. She is big on sniffing everything, finding stinky stuff to roll around in and chasing the critters in our yard, like squirrels and chipmunks.  She's also been known to have a run in with some tree frogs that like to hang out in our driveway and garage. The jumping startles her every time. We've also had some close encounters with the neighborhood skunks. Fortunately they were close calls and not full on disasters. She (knock on wood) has not been sprayed yet.....

She does love to be with her people and has no concept of personal space. Her typical greeting involves her nose in uncomfortable places. Her favorite thing to do is to lay on the couch next to her person and shove her whole head behind them. She also loves getting pets from everyone she meets. We take her to a local nursing home where she's friends with everyone. She knows how to brighten everyone's day she comes into contact with.

The Previous Pups

Dixie in the shop
Dixie

Dixie was the dog we had prior to Lucy. They had an overlap of about 2 years before Dixie unfortunately passed away. She was a Lemon Beagle mix. She kept a great eye on everything. Always letting us know when someone was approaching the house even if they were a quarter mile away.  She was very protective of her people and homestead. She loved to climb on your lap and snuggle. Fortunately she was only about 30 lbs. She was not, however, fond of the cats. She had a very high prey drive and was constantly chasing the cats around the house, which they did not appreciate.

She loved to run and follow the scent of the neighborhood rabbits no matter where it led. She loved her walks but was not fond of meeting other dogs. We were surprised at how well and quickly she bonded with Lucy. They were snuggle buddies from day 1.

We adopted Dixie from a local shelter called Dog Orphans in Dudley Ma, when she was about 12 weeks old. If you're in the area check them out. They always have adorable dogs. We were lucky enough to have her as part of our family for 12 years.

Rusty

What can I say about Rusty. We think he was a purebred English Lab. We adopted him from Texas. He was found wandering the streets of Houston. Apparently he had been there for a while because he was super skinny when we got him. Because of this (and in a very lab like manner) he never met a meal he didn't love. We would call him our canine hoover because if food hit the floor it would take him all of 3 seconds to find it and devour it. Our floors haven't been that clean since he passed in 2022 at the ripe old age of 15ish.  We aren't sure how old he was when he came so it's a best guess.

He was total typical lab. He would play fetch forever, loved the water. It didn't matter, puddles, ponds, rivers, lakes, the ocean, and even our popup pool.  We were afraid he'd tear through the sidewalls so we taught him to use the ladder to get out of the pool. As for getting in he just took a running start and jumped over the side with no problem.  Even when we didn't want him to.  He was a complete nut job and meathead but I wouldn't want him any other way. He loved his people and pretty much everyone he met. When we'd go camping others in the campground would stop by our campsite to say good bye to him when they were leaving. He loved the attention. He couldn't get enough.
